Rustenburg began life in 1682 and has had an interesting history. In the early 1800’s, the then owner Jacob Eksteen gave a part of his land to his son-in-law, who promptly sold it as a separate winery, Schoongezicht. Both estates flourished in the first half of the 19th century, but by the 1850’s recession and disease of the vines meant they both fell upon hard times. In 1892, to-be Prime Minister of the Cape, John X Merriman, and son-in-law Sir Jacob Barry rescued both wineries and returned them to their former glory.
The Barlow’s – having acquired Rusterburg in 1941 – have been the estate’s longest serving family. In 1987, two became one when the family acquired Shoongezicht and returned the estate to its original form.
Bold cassis nose and palate, this silky textural wine has real depth and polish. Although ready for drinking now this wine will easily age and improve for another 5 years plus.
Delicious with a fine steak, cooked classically, or a fine rack of lamb – do decant an hour before serving both to aerate and also there may be a small amount of sediment formed.
