100% Pinot Noir
2009 was an exceptional vintage in Champagne, described by Decanter as producing 'sumptuous wine for all three varieties'' (January 2018)
Vines are mainly planted in the Côte des Bars on limestone-clay soil on steep, sun-drenched hillsides. 2009 was an exceptional year in Champagne; a perfect summer was followed by ideal conditions at harvest. In such vintages Jean-Christophe Gremillet tries to ‘emphasize the special nature of an exceptional harvest while remaining true to the house’s style’. To best express the quality of terroir at Champagne Gremillet for the 2009 vintage released he selected only Pinot Noir from first press juice. Following fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel vats (16° for the alcoholic and 18° for the malolactic) and a secondary fermentation in bottle, the wine is matured on lees for a minimum of 5 years. Finally the wine is disgorged with a 'liquer de dosage' of 9gl/l made from their own finished wine.
Gremillet is a family owned estate of around 45 hectares; traditionally winegrowers, since the 18th century they have sold their grapes to other producers. However, since 1979 they have been making their own Champagne, with Anne Gremillet currently in charge of proceedings.
