Banyuls, Cuvée Léon Parcé, Domaine de La Rectorie (50cl bottle)

France, Roussillon

Possibly the best alternative to fine Port? Dark and juicily sweet this exotic dessert wine has just the right level of sugar and is not too alcoholic. Bold flavours of ripe Turkish figs, damson jam dominate and there is even a hint of dark chocolate and liquorice. A wine to be sipped and savoured.”

Origin

Banyuls is located a stone's throw away from the Spanish border, a French Appelation d'Origine Contrôlée in the southern corner of the Roussillon region. The estate handles 30 hectares of mountain vineyards spread over 30 small parcels, covering different exposures, altitudes, grape varieties, soils and proximity to the sea, all producing a number of 'microterroirs' from which grapes are sourced.

Grape Variety

The wine is a mix of old Grenache with a little Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc.

Grapes are macerated whole-bunched for a few days. Fermentation is stopped due to the addition of neutral alcohol to the must, before maceration is allowed to continue for 2 to 3 weeks, allowing the alcohol to extract the flavour of the grape. Aged in wood for one year.

Alcohol Percentage

16.5%

Cellar Potential

Drink now or will keep for the next 5 years. Once opened, drink over the next 2-3 days.

Producer

Domaine de la Rectorie is owned by Marc Parcé, the wine named after his grandfather. Previously, grapes were taken to the local cooperative - which today handles 70% of the region's grapes - but in 1984 it was decided that production was taken back into family hands, to resume the practice of their great-grandparents whom they inherited the estate off.

Food Match

A clear match with anything chocolate, also good with blue cheese or as a “meditative” 'digestif'. Best served chilled.

In the press

"... dark sweet cherry and orange zest on the palate with a bracing mandarin/deep citrus acidity. Just a hint of wood spice. Delicious. Despite the alcohol and sweetness, it's sharp and tangy and refreshing."
