The Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is a cool climate region in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the surrounding mountains funnelling sea breezes and frequent mists through the vineyards. Vines sit on well-draining gravelly soils of granite origin, with clay deposits on the lower reaches. Combined with different aspects, the family’s three vineyard sites yield a range of flavour profiles in the grapes – resulting in characterful and complex wines.
100% Pinot Noir.
Grapes are hand-harvested and cooled in special refrigeration facilities before sorting. Natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts occurs, followed by 11 months ageing in Burgundian oak (28% new) barriques.
Drink now and over the next 3 years.
Founded by Cape Wine Master, Dave Johnson and his wife, Felicity (née Newton), Newton Johnson Family Vineyards has been solidly building its reputation over the past 20 years. Since their first vintage in 1997 made from bought fruit, they are now producing some of the Cape’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their own 15 hectares of vines. No less than three Five Stars in Platter’s Wine Guide 2017 says it all!
Not least, having completed his Wine Master’s thesis on the Pinot Noir grape, Dave has always been driven by passion for that variety and an intimate knowledge of the vineyard sites from which to source the best grapes.
Try with the classic Chinese style duck and cherry or plum sauce, or wild mushroom risotto.
