Tres Picos Garnacha, Bodegas Borsao

Spain, Campo de Borja

“Fine, ripe and spicy nose with a juicy, savoury red jam fruit palate. There is note of liquorice here too. Rounded and nicely rich without being heavy.”

Origin

Bodegas Borsao is located in the Campo de Borja - which they refer to as the “empire of the Garnacha“ - southeast of Rioja. Grapes are harvested from the foothills of the Moncayo mountain; at 600-700 metres above sea level. Warm days are tempered by cool nights, which aid the ripening process and preserve acidity in the grape. The Garnacha thrives in the hot climate and this is a special selection of some of the oldest vines.

Grape Variety

100% Garnacha (aka Grenache).

Harvest takes place in early October, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks followed by maceration on skins and maturation for 10 months in French oak barriques.

Drink now and over the next 2 years.

Producer

Bodegas Borsao was established as a cooperative in 2001, consisting of three of the most progressive cellars and 620 member growers. They are by far the dominant producer in the Campo de Borja, their vineyards covering 2,500 hectares out of the total 6,300 hectares in the region.

Food Match

Works well with good, old fashioned rustic fare – classically “Coq au Vin”.

Suitable for vegetarians.

Wine Spectator: 91 points

"The outstanding 2014 Tres Picos (Garnacha) is 100% Grenache and comes from some of their oldest Grenache vineyards on the slopes of the Moncayo Mountains. Yields are less than two tons of fruit per acre and this wine was aged in neutral French oak and stainless-steel tanks for ten months prior to bottling. It's a beautiful wine, with plenty of Southern Rhône-like black cherry liqueur, garrigue, pepper, licorice and spice. It is medium to full-bodied, lusty and heady. This is a beauty to drink over the next 2-3 years". The Wine Advocate
