Today, Cantine Belisario is the biggest producer of Verdicchio in the Matelica DOC, a smaller zone than nearby Castelli di Jesi (which also produces Verdicchio from the same grape). The climate here is more continental than in Castelli di Jesi and the combination of warm days and cool nights gives a longer growing season, and lovely aromatic qualities to the wines. The vineyards are situated on a south-facing hillside 350-450 metres above sea level.
Grapes are destemmed, pressed and clarified then fermented cool. The wine is aged for 2 months and is unoaked to maximise freshness.
Drink now and over the next 18 months.
The Cantine Belisario co-operative was founded in 1971. Today, it features 300 hectares of vineyards, of which 24 are organically cultivated. The Terre di Valbona is a blend of grapes selected from some of the best vineyards included in the joint enterprise.
Lovely with a baby leaf, anchovy and dill salad, or butternut squash roasted with pine nuts and puy lentils.
Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
