Villiera Wines are situated north of Stellenbosch, close to the Simonsberg Mountain which separates the region from nearby Paarl. The estate specialises in Cap Classique – South Africa’s answer to Champagne – however red wine production has become increasingly important over the years; from 5% of plantings in the 1980s, it now accounts for nearly half.
72% Touriga Nacional and 28% Shiraz.
Grapes are handpicked and sorted before being transported to the winery. The wine is given time in oak before being bottled early to preserve the fruit flavours. The blend of Touriga Nacional and Shiraz aims to give the wine a rich, intense flavour whilst maintaining a smooth, approachable style.
Drink now or over the next 2-3 years.
Villiera is a family venture that began in 1983, with cousins Jeff and Simon Grier replanting classic and local varieties in the estate’s 180 hectares of vineyards. Environmental standards are a key focus of the Grier family, who interestingly employ 1000 Peking ducks to handle pest control!
“Down to Earth” is a brand developed by Villiera, whose ethos is to create wine to suit any occasion and anybody’s tastes, maintain responsible environmental practices and to deliver consistent quality and value for money.
Made for char grilled or BBQ meats, or perhaps a moderately spicy lamb, chicken or lentil curry.
Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

“Subtle chocolate-cherry aroma – totally moreish and mouth-watering. Easy and smooth without being simple. There’s Syrah’s dark fruit and a hint of the floral side of Touriga, all well in harmony.” Jancis Robinson, MW May 2015.
