Viña del Oja Tinto 2015 is what is termed as “Joven” – by that “young” and in this case unoaked – with bold fruit flavours and nice hint of jaminess. Drinks remarkably like the fruit flavours in a blackberry and apple pie, really juicy and hint of strawberry jam on the finish.”

Origin

The Tempranillo grape is the basis of all the Bodega's wines (bar the Viura white), an ancient native variety whose name derives from the Spanish "temprano", meaning early, in reference to the fact it ripens earlier than other Spanish grapes. The family owns 100 hectares of vineyard on either side of the River Ebro in the Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, the temperanillo thriving in the chalky silty soils.

Grape Variety

100% Tempranillo.

The family source their grapes from 100 hectares of vineyards, undergoing a rigorous selection process before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. While many of their wines are aged in barrel, this particular wine is unoaked.

Alcohol Percentage

12.5%

Cellar Potential

Drink now or keep for the next 3 years.

Producer

Bodegas Señorío de Arana is a winery founded in the 1970's, although the Santiago family behind the enterprise have been growing grapes for over 100 years. The winery is situated in the village of Labastida in the prime sub region of Alavesa in Rioja. The family firm produces its wine with a balanced combination of tradition aligned to state-of-the art technology, selling 80% of its wine to the domestic market.

Food Match

Perfect with roast pork and apple sauce, or perhaps guinea fowl with its gamey flavour.

My wife & I recently had the chance to give this a comparative tasting to another suppliers highly rated young Rioja. This example won hands down and is a beautiful, easy drinking fruity example of modern Rioja.
It underlines for me the value of the Wine Trust selection process.
