This is a wine of great quality from one of Spain’s finest regions, the district of Ribera

“Rioja’s great rival! Such is the reputation and wonderful terroir of this region that a nucleus of other top producers and wines has emerged over the years. Made with the same grapes and methods in general as Rioja, the Ribera del Duero region makes similar wines but they often have a richer, silkier texture and feel” Nick Adams MW

The revitalised estate is run by the Benito Fernando brothers – Fernando, Gaspar, Javier.  Having repurchased vineyards they began replanting in 1988; they now own over 70 hecatres of vineyards in the prime districts of Curiel de Duero, Pesquera, Peñafiel and Fompedraza. The average age of the vines is an impressive 60 years. Their first new cuvée was launched in 1992 and they have never looked back.

The Briego Crianza is made from 100% Tempranillo, with 14 months in oak barrels – a mix of both American and French – before spending an additional 14 months resting in the bottle prior to release.  Medium bodied, savoury and mellow, this is now perfectly mature.

This wine is perfect with lamb or mild game – either roasted or in a casserole.   It also works well with a good ratatouille, especially if this has been roasted in the oven.
