Origin

Clos des Mouches is a famous old Premier Cru vineyard south of the town of Beaune on your way to Pommard. It gained its name from the historical term for bees (not flies) due to the favourable position of the slopes for bee keepers. The hives are all gone now but the name remained and with its beautiful exposure and soil structure it is one of those rare vineyards in Burgundy which produces both top quality white (Chardonnay) and red (Pinot Noir) wine from the same site. Berthelemot own two parcels and this wine is a blend of the two.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir.

Hand harvested grapes are gently pressed with a pre fermentation soak to extract colour and aroma. The finished wine was aged in French oak casks for 12 months, with about 25% being new. 2011 was a fine and relatively delicate vintage and this wine is typical of the forward and expressive style of the year. However, there is a backbone and a level of finesse and elegance which personifies both the terroir of Clos des Mouches and the Berthelemot house style.

Domaine Berthelemot is relatively young Domaine, having been formed in 2006, but with mature vineyards in classic appellations of Beaune, Pommard, Monthélie and Meursault. The new custodians, Brigitte Berthelemot and winemaker, Marc Cugney are passionate about the multitude of expressions the Burgundian terroir offers. The Domaine practises "agriculture raisonnée" - farming practiced under various ecological guidelines - for which it was certified in 2009.

Food Match

Try serving with a pink leg of lamb, crusted with rosemary and garlic. A wild mushroom risotto will work just as nicely!
