Origin
Despite its relatively northern location, Alsace is the 2nd driest and warmest region in France after the Mediterranean. The Vosges mountains to the west act as a rain shadow; meanwhile, mountains to the east complete a bowl-like effect in which summer heat is trapped in low lying areas. This special microclimate is perfect for producing ripe healthy fruit.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Gris.
Vines are cultivated using some of the bio-dynamic principles, a more measured approach than wholehearted biodynamic farming by adapting treatments to the conditions of each vintage. Once in the winery, the Pinot Gris is part fermented in old oak barrels and undergoes extended less contact.
The Gassmann's focus on late harvesting and extended ageing periods before bottling, resulting in wines of texture, balance and character. Their products are characterised by higher residual sugar contents and are well suited to drinking with food.

Producer
This estate in Rorschwihr is the result of a marriage between Marie-Thérèse Rolly and Louis Gassmann; the combining of the two family estates means they have 45 hectares of vineyards to their name. Both are the umpteenth generation in their respective families to produce wine, an activity which dates back to the 17th century.
Food Match
Serve with mildly spicy fish and white meat dishes – e.g. a green curry. Also Thai spiced fish soup with lemongrass and coconut. Rich enough to go with a pâté starter (and toast) for a change!
