Whilst Christmas is one of the most enjoyable and social times of the year, it  involves a lot of planning and preparation with a funny habit of creeping up on you! In a series of blogs, let the WineTrust team help organise your perfect wine selection: this week, canapés, nibbles and party pourers!

christmas canapesOne of the very best aspects of Christmas is indulging in really good food and wine – and sharing these experiences with family and friends.

At WineTrust we have given a lot of thought to helping you with this part of the organisation. If you are in charge of hosting, let us kick off the festive season with a selection of wines to entertain and indulge your guests.

When putting on a selection of canapés and nibbles they often range dramatically in styles and flavours, but one thing that should link them all together is that they are savoury. Candidates often include pastries, cured meats, smoked and cured fish, egg and dairy, tomato and green vegetable, flavoured with soft spice and mild curry, also saltiness … to name a few.

Simply, Sparkling Wines and Champagne are classic partners, but with so much variety and choice deciding on the ideal wine can be a challenge. Let us help make things quick and easy; the WineTrust team has selected a number of wines based on price points, styles and types to suit different tastes and budgets. Sample below to find your favourite party pourer.

Christmas ProseccoReal Value: Prosecco Spumante Extra Dry Vallete NV for under £10

This Prosecco is a real steal! Introduced earlier this year, the WineTrust team took to its easy drinking style, a zesty palette with notes of cream soda – quaffable and a sure crowd pleaser.

A lovely and lively fully sparkling “spumante” Prosecco, with this it is easy to see why Prosecco is the UK’s most popular sparkling wine.

Christmas TaltarniSomething a little different: Taltarni Taché 2011 from Down Under for under £20

New World Sparkling Wine should be on everybody’s wish list, this fantastic producer from Victoria, Australia proving there is fantastic quality to a be found a little further afield.

A fantastic rosé with bold red fruit flavours, polished and really satisfying, and for under £20 this is a soft and creamy alternative for those who find Champagne just a little too “dry” (and a bit beyond their budget!)

Recent winner: Best Australian Rosé- The Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships 2015

Christmas AyalaExcellent Value Champagne: Ayala Brut Majeur NV at £25

This fantastic Champagne house, one of the original eighteen ‘Grandes Marques’, is owned by Bollinger and is situated in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ, but doesn’t command the usual price tag! This is an affordable luxury, entertain guests and indulge yourself with the highest quality Champagne for as little as £25.

The perfect canapé wine, this is really delicate, pure and refreshing, with a zesty palate and notes of red and white berries, a touch of brioche, underpinned by a creamy and mildly nutty core.

A real treat: Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve NV at £35christmas heidsieck

The pièce du résistance of any Christmas party, this Brut Réserve is our top of the range Champagne; Charles Heidsieck are true frontrunners in the region, deservedly gaining multiple industry awards and widespread interest.

This near perfect wine reflects the fine craftsmanship of the wine making team and their obsessive quality focus: remarkable honeyed richness and depth of flavour, with the most delicate, moreish choux pastry notes. One of the finest non-vintage Champagnes on the market.

This really does go with food due to its extra level of concentration and richness. Try with richer, savoury nibbles – great with smoked salmon – and, not least, just to indulge.

Stay tuned for further Christmas offerings, WineTrust will ensure all your wine needs are met from start to finish this festive season!
