Origin
The wine is named after Vasco da Gama, a 15th century Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea via the Cape of Good Hope, fitting for a wine made from one of Portugal’s most revered varieties – although it wasn’t until the 1990s that production really began to take off in South Africa. Touriga Nacional loves sun soaked, warm climates and Stellenbosch has caught this grape just right – perfect ripeness and balance.
Producer
Another star find from our intrepid wine “liberator” Richard Kelley MW. Over the past 20 years, Richard Kelley MW has become one of the most respected authorities on South African wine. Between 1995 and 2002, he lived and worked in the Cape, witnessing the renaissance of the post-apartheid wine industry. Throughout this time, he established a healthy rapport with the great and the good of the local wine scene, affording him access to their distinguished cellars. Along the way he started to discover small parcels of wine and engaged some of the finest Cape winemakers in project work with him. You might say he became a “Cape Crusader!” (enough Editor).
